A tech event series from OTTO. We’re driving diversity and equal opportunities. The develop<HER> empowers professional flinta* in IT, providing a platform to exchange insights and learn from each other’s journeys and experiences.

What can you look forward to?
The next and eighth develop<HER> will take place on 29.11.2023 – 100% remote! So you can join the event digitally from anywhere.
We have put together a great programme for you: We will start with an interactive session for all participants and from 10 am you can take part in a total of 10 different tech sessions throughout the day. You can expect exciting impulses from IT experts from OTTO and the entire Otto Group.
You will also have the opportunity to talk to colleagues from the HR department in an open Q&A session and to network and exchange ideas directly with each other in a community session. We are sure that there will be plenty for everyone and wish you lots of fun learning, exchanging ideas and networking!

Getting away from Kubernetes - A migration journey from EKS to ECS

We realized at my team at OTTO, that Kubernetes is generating a lot of ops tasks for us, but is not supporting us in any way. It was one of the few parts of our toolchain, that was not fully managed and thus we thought about alternatives. Last year, after some internal discussions and brainstormings, the decision was made: „Kubernetes (EKS) has to go!“ But the containers have to go somewhere. So it was clear that we wanted to move away from AWS EKS and towards AWS ECS. An alternative at AWS that can do less on paper, but also needs less maintenance.
I would like to show you why we made this decision, how the migration went and what we learned from it and why I think that many more projects in the cloud should not rely on Kubernetes.

Cultivating Technical Writing

Are you familiar with the role of a „Technical Writer“? Or have you wondered what Technical Writers do or how they can help make your job easier? A few years ago, „the Technical Writer“ was an unknown role at OTTO – until the first one was hired in 2020.
Since then, many things have already changed and improved. In this session, we’ll talk about what it’s like to cultivate a completely new role in such a large company. We share with you what we’ve already accomplished and how, but also where we still have some „hiccups.“
We’d also love to exchange with you on that role and on technical documentation: do you have touchpoints with Technical Writers? Do you consume technical documentation? What do you wish for as readers? Do you sometimes create documentation yourself? Any experiences you’ve made?

From Frontend to Backend - My journey from OTTO eCommerce to OTTO IT

In 2019 I switched sides: I moved from the eCommerce at otto.de to the Retail IT here at OTTO.
The cliche, that the eCommerce is a rather advanced and fast environment whereas any sort of IT department is rather slow and traditional became immediately obvious to me.
During this 40min talk I want to take you with me on the journey I made, the conclusions I made and the explanations I found.
